So this week’s Kentucky SPIN’s Tuesday Quick Tips is in regards to compensatory education and ESY, extended school year and the IEP.

And the quick tip to know is they are two different things and not to get them confused.

Compensatory education is for children who have an IEP, but may have, especially now with COVID, the IEP team, ARC team may need to look at if compensatory education is needed if the IEP services and supports were not able to be provided due to COVID.

And there’s going to be a bit of, you’re going to have varying degrees. And not all children will qualify or need it. But the important thing to know to keep in mind, what’s the difference between compensatory education and ESY, extended school year?

Well, compensatory education is what you should have got that you didn’t get. Regardless of the reason why. And what they do, it considers is a denial of FAPE, free, appropriate public education.

Well, right now COVID has created that for a lot of children. Now, a lot are getting the services and supports through alternate means. And so that necessarily doesn’t mean you would need or get compensatory education.

But the thing to keep in mind is compensatory education is what you should have got that you didn’t get.

ESY is extended school year services, is so you don’t lose what you got. Right. So you don’t want to lose those skills. It’s not to learn new skills.
